Covid-19 Risk Assessment

Please take the time to read my Covid-19 Risk Assessment. Coronavirus has changed the way we all live and work. Thank you to my lovely customers for their support and understanding over the last few months. I’ve been offering remote support since March and outdoor consultations since June. I am now in the position to add back in indoor home visits from July, with some alterations and safety measures. Rest assured, this will only be if you are comfortable and other options are not feasible.

Risk: Customer Contact

Most of my work is carried out in customer’s houses, using their devices, and in close proximity with them. In addition, a large proportion of my customers are elderly, and more vulnerable to Covid-19. There is an obvious risk that my customers might contract Covid-19 from me, or that I may contract it from my customers. This risk assessment sets out exactly what measures I have put in place to mitigate that risk.

Risk Controls

Remote Support is the preferred model of support

Since the 15th of March I have been using remote support to help customers, in place of face to face visits.

In order to facilitate remote support, I have changed my business model so that customers can run up a ‘tab’. This allows you to accumulate multiple short calls before paying. I charge in 15 minute increments.

BACS payments are strongly preferred over cash

Please pay by BACS where possible. If cash, please ensure that you have the exact amount to minimise contact. I will clean notes on receipt. I will continue to accept cheques, particularly if posted.

Distanced Device Drop-off and Pick-up

Where a device is being picked up dropped off for upgrade or support, the pick-up and drop-off will be carried out at a distance of over 1m in the open air. I will wear disposable gloves to take the device in and out of any case or packaging. In addtion:

  1. when working on the device, hand gel and a face covering will be used;
  2. the device will be wiped down with a 70% isopropyl alcohol wipe before and after work;
  3. as an added precaution, customers can elect to wait 3 days before using the device upon return.

Outdoor Consultations

If a face to face consultation is required, then outdoors is preferable to indoors, weather depending. This will minimise risk of transmission. In order to further mitigate risk I will

  1. stay at least 1m away from customers;
  2. wear a face mask;
  3. use 70% alcohol hand gel before, during and after each consultation;
  4. use 70% isopropyl alcohol wipes before and after touching any devices – these are safe for touch screens.

Visits Inside the Home

From 10th July I will be in a position to be able to recommence home visits under revised operating procedures. If an indoor consultation is the only option then the following controls will be in place:

  1. I will stay at least 1m away from customers at all times;
  2. Windows and/or doors should be open to ensure good ventilation to mitigate against the spread of disease;
  3. I will wear a face covering at all times;
  4. Devices will be wiped down with 70% isopropyl alcohol before and after every appointment;
  5. I will sanitize my hands with 70% alcohol gel before and after every appointment.

Government Guidance

Below are some specific points taken from the government guidance which I have explicitly taken into account. You can read that in full here: https://www.gov.uk/guidance/working-safely-during-coronavirus-covid-19/homes

  • Discussing working environment and practices with householders and clients in advance to confirm how the work will be carried out, if a physical visit is needed.
  • Communicating with households prior to arrival, and on arrival, to ensure the household understands the social distancing and hygiene measures that should be followed once work has commenced.
  • Frequent cleaning of objects and surfaces that are touched regularly, using your usual cleaning products.
  • Maintaining good ventilation in the work environment, for example keeping windows or doors open.
  • Washing your hands more often than usual for 20 seconds using soap and hot water, particularly after coughing, sneezing and blowing your nose.
  • Reducing the spread of germs when you cough or sneeze by covering your mouth and nose with a tissue or your sleeve, not your hands. Throw the tissue in a bin immediately, then wash your hands.
  • Cleaning regularly touched objects and surfaces using your regular cleaning products to reduce the risk of passing the infection on to other people.
  • If handwashing facilities are not accessible, you should carry hand sanitiser.
  • Minimising the contact during payments and exchange of documentation, for example, using electronic payment methods and electronically signed and exchanged documents.
